Persia: imperative and pertinent precursor to modern society. We often buy into modern propaganda about bad things in faraway lands – but it’s tragic that such a diverse, expansive, and influential part of humanity’s past is so grossly ignored. Did you know that Iran (Persia) is one of the oldest continuous cultures on Earth? Did you know that Persian Zoroastrianism predates and influenced monotheistic religions that came after it, like Judaism, Gnosticism, Christianity and Islam?

Please read The Book of Kings (Shahnameh) and discover 1) how much of Persian culture is intertwined in yours and 2) the lyrical inspiration for my song casting you as a traveling musician in one of the richest, most colorful and prolific cradles of the human experiment.

Gitano en Shahnameh

Shahnameh, Book of Kings, poem sings,
free will brings hope or disaster
Shahnameh, in that day, they would say,
choice persuades now and hereafter

Truth or a lie, each path chosen
We’re just passersby in this life
Strive, multiply, to the future be true,
follow hope, follow light
In your days, help the poor, open doors,
stop the wars now and forever
When you play, what you say, show a way,
guiding stray spirits together

Truth unifies, each word chosen
Imply, verify, exemplify, demystify
To the lowest be kind, purify, testify

Love the land, take a stand, lend a hand,
understand all that is noble
Find a true attitude, don’t exclude,
end the feud our family is global

Truth or a lie, each path chosen
We’re just passersby in this life
Strive, multiply, to the future be true,
follow love, follow light

Somewhere out there, on a border,
there are refugees seeking asylum
from persecution, destitution,
retribution for failed revolution…

Truth unifies – Demystify –

Somewhere inside a conscience denied,
actions forged into cold lies and resides
with obliteration, annihilation,
suffocation and cruel subjugation

Truth unifies, each word chosen
Imply, verify, exemplify, demystify
To the lowest be kind, purify
Edify –

Citadel band member, Rejyna, has uploaded a 2nd song from her new CD, IDIO, titled ‘Common Voice’

Hear the song here:
Soundcloud:  https://soundcloud.com/rejyna/common-voice-go-easy
ReverbNation:  http://www.reverbnation.com/rejyna/song/22180153-common-voice

Rejyna notes, “this is a fun song to play and the words hold a lot of meaning for me.  We have choices and freedoms that many do not and the lyrics to this song remind me to stay active, stay vigilant, stay alert and above all – add my common voice to the cry for liberty for all – and of course, the guitarist in me loves playing the shred leads between acoustic rhythms – and playing the drums and having the looper repeat what I play is something that appeases the novice drummer in me…”

01 – Common Voice (Go Easy)
There was a time
when the common voice among us
had no chance to dare a king
Dreams and wondering
were smothered into suffered silence
subjugated by imperial strings

Now’s the time
for the common voice among us
to challenge netharias kings
Songs and sidewalk speeches
struggle to abate the silence,
to stay the liberated from surrendering

Do we see it’s all all right?
Do we see it’s all of light?

Still the surf and the noble
share a common threat
as our homeworld
suffers from neglect –

Easy, go easy
Say you want to love
Say you are for love

Right now, shout it out,
roundabout, all around the world.
Write it down, right it out,
your mind light can shine now.

Make your rhyme outside time
Speak your mind
to eyes blinded by the fright
Use, lose, abuse
or choose to unite
There are no second chances
to roll the liberty dice…

Music recorded using multiple memory slots on one JamMan Solo, Vocals sung thru an SM57 DigiTech Vocalist Live pro and tracked on a DigiTech GNX4, loops stitched and massaged in SoundForge.

REJYNA – IDIO – LINER NOTES

Contemplating a new release, I wondered if there may be some song seeds in my ‘audio journal’ of snippets. Always endeavoring to keep creative juices flowing, I have amassed an enormous library of musical ideas created spontaneously during rehearsals and sessions.

To record an album (before I owned a looper) I’d use a handheld audio or video recorder to capture spur of the moment ideas. Later, I’d sift through them, looking for pieces that spoke to me most to take through development – first musically developing them on guitar, then lyrically; finding phonetics, then matching those sounds with words and concepts. The goal is to make demo guides for future conventional recording sessions. It can be a tenuous, time-hogging, expensive endeavor.

More recently, instead of my former way of capturing inspirations, I’ve been using a looping pedal, the DigiTech JamMan Solo. It’s like a foot-controlled recorder; you record yourself playing, and then it repeats that phrase while you add layers of accompaniment on top of it – storing each variation as uncompressed wave files in memory spaces on an SD card.

I use this pedal extensively in my live shows, rehearsals and jams. Once it is full, I transfer those files to my computer so I can again fill it up with ideas. It has become my song notebook.

I realized I had over 2500 snippets. I was surprised that the sound quality was good and that my musical execution of various parts were acceptable to me as ‘final cuts’ – at least in the spirit of being improvised spontaneously. I did not practice or pre-write anything, it was all written and recorded on-the-fly.

I set about stitching and massaging a few of these ‘loops’ using SoundForge software, then stem mixed the music and loaded it onto my DigiTech GNX4 workstation to write lyrics and record lead vocals.

In all my other releases, songs were honed and rehearsed, solos and lyrics and accompanying instrumentation were all developed over time and with lots of rehearsing before going to the studio to record.  But this release is just the opposite – improvised, on the spot, no do-overs, no punch-ins – just my inner voice saying “wow, this is a cool riff, I wonder what I can put with this” – and then getting lost adding, subtracting, layering and experimenting and fast filling up those memory ‘slots’on the JamMan.

I could say these songs are ‘accidental’, but I see all of my art as discoveries. I rarely ‘intend’ anything. My ‘artisan discipline’ is to grab the tools (guitar, paintbrush, pen, mouse, etc.) and let it come out of me – restricted by neither conscious effort nor aim for predicted result.

I also approach the creation of lyrics and vocal melody with this ‘hands-off’ approach. I first sing along to my song, not using words, just sounds and phonetics. Looking for vowels and unique syllable potentials, I record these mumblings onto one track and then study them for actual words that match. After finding those matches, I have a skeletal framework for what the message and balance of lyrics will elude to.

Often times, the sounds of the music will lead me to a ‘picture’ and I’ll write using phonetics towards the goal of ‘painting that sound picture with words’ – such as Mandolian Mirage, which sounded like a song about the desert to me or Jorie Green Thumb, whose sounds conjured images of my mom in her garden. Other times, there will be words that come to me during the initial recordings, as in Beyond My Back Door or Too Long Gone. When I listened to the music of Android Pageant, before it had that name, it sounded like a parade of robots to me, hence its name. And then there’s Quacky…

Whether I’m able to arrive at coherent or relevant musical/lyrical results is a risk I enjoy, especially in contrast to contrived process of theming intentionally.

I was really just noodling between songs in rehearsal when these nuggets presented themselves. No sophisticated equipment, just ‘one takes’ on a mono pedal recorder, stacked and layered in various combinations. I was ready to release this as an instrumental CD but my mom wanted to “hear me sing more” – and a few others who heard the first mixes confirmed mom’s advice. I am glad I listened to the counsel of my mentors – this was fun to write.

The title ‘IDIO’ came to me after studying a graphic I made using symbols for ‘record, play, repeat’ electronic buttons. I noticed the arrangement spelled IDIO – so I looked it up and it fits my approach to this release perfectly; distinctive, personal, unconventional, informal unique…

And for the gearheads (like me): At the time of this recording, I used one JamMan Solo pedal connected (fed) by the FX send of my mixer so that all channels going thru the mixer (voice, guitar, drums) could be sent to the looper and brought back into the sound system through a discreet channel on the board. I played my 1980’s Ovation Balladeer and Yamaha APX500II thru a 1980’s Boss GT3 multi-effects board. I also used a Tyler Mountain Ovation-style electric mandolin. I sang backing vocals and most chorus/looped lines thru an ATM73a Audio-Technica headset mic, the lead vocals were sung using the Shure SM57 (that I’ve had since high school) into the GNX4 – my mikes are routed thru a DigiTech Vocalist Live Pro harmonizer/effects unit. My mixer is a Yamaha MG82cx and my drums/percussion are played on a Yamaha DD-55 electronic kit. No drum machines, sequencers or synthesizers are used on this recording except for the use of my Godin Freeway SA synth guitar thru a Roland GR-20 for some additional sounds on ‘Jorie Green Thumb’.

I hope you enjoy the adventures collected here; my goal is to inspire others to tap into their own creative inclinations. Instead of waiting for expensive gear, big budgets, approval of others, or the time when everything is ‘just right’ – I purport an axiom relevant to this release:

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
[T. Roosevelt] – in other words, act now – in word, deed, art, sight, sound or voice – the how is our choice.

Warning: Live Loops Ahead (One of Rejyna’s Looptober Tour pun posters – http://facebook.com/rejynamusic)

Did you know that Looptober is the month that follows Stomptember?

If you didn’t know that already, Rejyna is hoping to get you up to speed with her Looptober Mini-Tour and promo campaign.  Her poster series combines witty wordplay with images that are intended to imbed the word ‘loop’  with pun-infused imagery like street signs, loop straws, Hot Wheels loop tracks and a well-known cereal brand.  (Look in the ‘Photos’ section at http://facebook.com/rejynamusic)

How does the member of a progressive metal/folk rock band migrate to the world of solo live looping?  “Accidentally…“ Following gentle urging from family and eclectic venue owners, Rejyna has re-discovered her solo-performing persona through the i/o of a looper, effects and a vocal harmonizer.

Ironically, Rejyna was surprised to discover there was a new home for her multi-genre style of music.  “When I first started using the looper and harmonizer in my solo acoustic set, I had no idea there was a whole movement centered around live looping.  I was simply trying to make playing solo more fun by adding vocal harmonies and lead guitar parts overtop of the basic chords in my repertoire.  Although I had seen or heard about other artists using loopers, I was only exposed to the ambient, improv, noise and freeform loopists.”

Contrary to what Rejyna and others may think, the live looping movement is not focused on a particular style of music.  In the ‘about’ section from Rick Walker’s (a veteran live looping artist and promoter) Y2K Loopfest website, it says: “To this day, in that community, there is no style or genre of music associated with the movement. The only thing that links thousands of emerging live looping artists is a strong and supportive sense of community and a love for the concept of looping live in public.”   As one can tell by the ‘archives’ links on Rick’s site, the art of live looping is not a ‘new’ thing:  “The annual Y2K International Live Looping Festival, was begun in 2001 by Rick Walker, himself a found sound/live looping artist. It is the first international live looping festival and longest running one in history.” (http://y2kloopfest.com/about/)

Let’s back up a bit for those who don’t know what ‘live looping’ means. Live looping involves the use of a device (there are many types from several MI manufacturers) that allows a performer to record musical sections in front of the audience and then replay that piece while adding other sound and effect layers to it.  It may involve footpedals (stompboxes), computers, conventional and non-conventional instruments (trash can lids, wood saws, etc.), voice, silence and noise – stacked, layered, stripped, reversed, time-shifted.  Anything goes EXCEPT that the use of anything pre-recorded is not allowed.  This isn’t karaoke…

Being a loop newbie, Rejyna was surprised by the invitation to perform with the other live loopers.  “While I admire those artists tremendously, I did not consider that my song-based approach to looping would fit into their niche. See, I use a looper to build organized musical pieces on stage, and while bridge sections in my songs do allow for freeform experimentation, I was nonetheless surprised, anxious and quite honored to be invited.”

Resisting her apprehension about fitting in, Rejyna accepted.  “I told myself, they wouldn’t have invited me if they didn’t think my style would fit – so, I accepted invitations to live looping events in Portland, Seattle, Danville and Santa Cruz.  I hope they like what I’m planning to exhibit…  I’m calling this my ‘Looptober’ tour” and while my main goal is to share my songs, my guilty pleasure in all of this is that I will get to be inspired by the best-of-the-best in the looping community.  I am certain that the music I release in the future will benefit immensely from the things I witness from the other artists on this mini-tour.

If you are familiar with the style of music that Citadel puts out, you’ll be surprised to hear how Rejyna takes those songs into the solo realm.  Her set features a few Citadel songs re-done looper-style mixed in with her new compositions.  She will be promoting her CD Solo Sojourn Live and is planning to release a DVD/Blu-Ray disc of the Looptober tour in December.

If you’re in or near one of these cities in Looptober, make sure to attend, unless you don’t mind behind left out of the loop:

Rejyna - Solo Sojourn Live

Rejyna - Solo Sojourn Live CD Gatefold

The following is taken from the liner notes of the Solo Sojourn live CD:

Using the latest in musical instrument technology, the acoustic folk-rock performance you hear on this CD is created in front of a live audience ‘on-the-fly’ by one person.

Rejyna plays the rhythm passages while simultaneously recording them live onto a phrase looper.  The looper then replays those parts while Rejyna sings and/or adds guitar leads and harmony guitar leads to those passages.  During this guitar layering process, Rejyna sings into a vocal harmonizer that creates realistic multi- part vocal harmonies based on and mixed alongside her original voice.

The result is a full, natural sounding sonic presentation that comes across like more than one person is playing and singing.  No pre-recorded ‘backing tracks’ nor in-studio overdubs are used on this recording – all layering or overdubbing is done by Rejyna on stage with the looper and harmonizer.  You can check out Rejyna’s web videos to watch the process for yourself.

Citadel music featured on this solo CD include:
Stygian Barque, Voice Inside, On Life and Living, Another, In Wonder, Standing Alone and Are You Aware.  The CD also includes Rejyna’s solo songs, The Songwriter, Freedom Dream, In Wonder, Dreamworld, and the instrumental songs, If I Cry and Happy Hands.

Rejyna’s Comments:
“I’ve had the pleasure of performing in many venues in my hometown during an extended visit with family and friends. Since it has been such a renewing experience, I’m releasing this CD of my solo live set to memorialize the good fun I have doing these performances with my guitar, looper and vocal harmonizer.
I’ve chosen the songs for this CD as a focus on some of the dream phases and life processes we go through when trying to find or rediscover ourselves, i.e., Self Doubt vs. Self Direction, Departures and Escapes vs. Surrenders and Separations, Renewal vs. Retreat, Cowardice vs. Celebration…
I am thankful for the supporters of original music, for the convivial coffee houses and taverns that give me stage time, and for the technology that enables me to put out such a big sound from one voice & two hands.

Citadel guitarist/composer Rejyna demonstrates in two recent videos, how a solo performer can sound like more than one person.  In these Citadel ‘Behind the Scenes’ videos – instead of using pre-recorded tracks – Rejyna creates her accompaniment live and ‘on-the-fly’

Using the Godin Freeway SA (Midi or Synth guitar) with the Roland GR-20 synth guitar pedal, a Digitech JamMan Solo looper and a DigiTech Vocalist Live 3, Rejyna runs through renditions of her Citadel songs ‘Stygian Barque’ (aka ”Baroque Ballad Barque’) and ‘Another’ (aka ‘Soft Rock Another’)

“Stygian Barque” is featured on the Citadel CD’s “The Citadel of Cynosure & Other Tales” and is also on ‘D’ANthologie 2 ~ Crosses or Crowns?”  with ‘Another’both of which are available on CDBaby at http://cdbaby.com/artist/citadel as well as on iTunes, eMusic, Amazon and other sites.

Stygian Barque: The metaphor of a boat (barque) sailing on the river Styx presents a message of internal struggle, with a merging of the heart and mind as the dream solution.

Another: Day after day, night after night, year after year – ever feel stuck in a cycle?  Rainbows are waiting in the dawn in Another Dream Away…

You can hear these songs live by following Citadel on Facebook http://facebook.com/citadelprog or by checking Rejyna’s solo performance schedule, Rejyna is at http://facebook.com/citadelsongs

The original Citadel guitarist/composer, Rejyna, will be performing an hour of Citadel songs ala solo acoustic style at Espresso Yourself Music Cafe in Powell, Ohio this Saturday.  Rejyna creatively uses a Digitech Jamman looper and Vocalist Live 3 to weave reworked versions of Citadel songs from several of the Citadel CD’s.
Although Citadel has been loosely classified as a progressive band (i.e. Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Kansas) for the last 30+ years, Rejyna is giving the band’s songs an earthy twist by performing in intimate venues using a single guitar and some interesting music technology.  She does not perform with ‘backing tracks’ or computers; instead she records whole song sections LIVE in front of the audience into a looper which then allows her to layer in vocals and guitar solo and dual leads.

Rejyna also uses the latest Digitech vocal effects – but she does not use them for ‘pitch correction’ or ‘autotune’, instead, she uses these devices to add harmonies to her lead vocal line in realtime.

How would one classify the music of Citadel as Rejyna presents it solo-style?  Call it folk rock, alternative, progressive folk, experimental indie – she just calls it Citadel…

For this special New Years Day show, Rejyna will also be joined on “Standing Alone” vocals by her mom and daughter, Margie and Jazmyn

Doors open at 6 and Rejyna’s set runs from 6:30 tp 7:30 pm

Come on out and hear some good music in a great venue on the first day of the new year!

Espresso Yourself Music Cafe is located at:

The Next Citadel CD…

After a long process of choosing songs, tracking basics, and fine tuning lyrics, the in-progress Citadel CD is well underway to the next stage of tedious, laborious overdubbing.  Following the anti-genre style of previous releases, the as-yet-untitled upcoming Citadel CD will deliver a strong mix of folk, rock, prog & symphonic with metal, classical and jazz undercurrents.

Citadel’s Rejyna comments, “I am using a few new things on this CD like the sweet Dean Boca 12-string semi-hollowbody electric, the Inspired Instruments YRG as a midi controller for on-computer revisions and the wonderful Digitech Jamman Solo.  Most of the improv overdub stuff will still be done on the Godin Freeway SA/Roland GR-20 combo directly into the Digitech GNX4.”

The Citadel guitarist continues, “so yeah, I’ve got some new toys to play with and that always means a lot of my improv orchestrations will be the result of experimentation with the new toys…although this part of the process is a burden of patience, perseverance and pain (see photo below); it is my favorite aspect.  A ‘Cliff Jumping’ brain adventure in sound.”

So there you have it, the band still refuses to pick a genre and stick with it…   Maybe that is actually a unconsious social comment as much as it is a sign of possible ADD…

We will all just have to wait a while longer to find out –
